4th Grade Soars with Morning “SOAR” Time
From Check-Ins to Movement- A Great Start to the Day
Each morning with Ms. Wynn, 4th grade students at Bolden EMS begin their day with a special routine called “SOAR Time”, a daily practice that sets a positive tone for learning and community.
After the morning announcements, students start with a mental health check-in, creating a safe space for self-awareness and reflection. From there, the fun begins—whether it’s discovering a new fun fact, sharing a joke, or solving a puzzle, every day brings something fresh. Students also engage with a short thought-provoking video, followed by a share-out writing response. Those who wish to share aloud build confidence and community, while their classmates practice attentive listening using the “SLANT” strategy (Sit up, Listen, Ask/Answer questions, Nod, and Track the speaker).
Movement is another key element of SOAR Time. Students might stretch with yoga, complete energizing exercises, follow along with “This or That” activities, or enjoy a lively round of Phonics Man Runs. These activities not only wake up their bodies but also strengthen focus for the day ahead.
Most importantly, SOAR Time gives students an opportunity to connect with one another, build trust, and strengthen classroom relationships. Teachers see it as a powerful way to foster engagement and community while helping students start each day on a positive note.
As one 4th grader put it: “It’s the best way to start the day—we get to learn, laugh, and move together!”
