4th Grade STEM Adventure: Building Roller Coasters with Ms. Wynn and Mr. Fanter
Students using mathematic skills to design, build and test roller coasters
The 4th grade students at Bolden Elementary Middle School recently embarked on an exciting STEM adventure in their math class, guided by the enthusiastic Ms. Wynn and Mr. Fanter. This hands-on project combined creativity, engineering, and mathematics, as students used multiplication to select parts for designing and building their very own roller coasters.
The adventure began with a lesson on multiplication, where students learned how to calculate the quantities of various components needed for their roller coaster designs. With their newfound skills, they eagerly chose parts, considering factors like length, height, and the number of loops and turns.
Once the designs were finalized, the building phase commenced. Students worked collaboratively, applying their mathematical knowledge to construct roller coasters that were not only structurally sound but also thrilling. The excitement peaked when it was time to test their creations. Each group presented their roller coaster, explaining the math behind their design choices, and then watched as their models were put to the test.
This STEM adventure not only reinforced important math concepts but also fostered teamwork, problem-solving, and creativity. Ms. Wynn and Mr. Fanter were thrilled with the students’ enthusiasm and ingenuity, and the 4th graders left the project with a deeper appreciation for how math can be applied in real-world scenarios.
