Field trip connects Bolden students to careers and community heritage
Sixth-graders from Charles F. Bolden Elementary Middle School stepped away from their classrooms last week for a field trip that blended hands-on career exploration with local history, reinforcing the value of education, civic awareness and pride in their community.
The day started at the Technical College of the Lowcountry, where students learned about post-graduation pathways. They received an overview of academic programs, including dual enrollment options that let high school students earn college credits early. A student named Amelia noted she was glad to learn about the FAFSA process for college funding. Tours of specialized labs followed, covering areas such as cybersecurity, where students saw real-time monitoring of digital threats; HVAC and welding, featuring hands-on demonstrations of technical trades; cosmetology, showcasing professional salon techniques; and paralegal studies, highlighting research and analytical skills used in the legal field.
“The field trip taught me how many choices there are at a tech college,” student Lucas said.
After the morning sessions, the group enjoyed a picnic lunch at Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park before stopping at Kilwins for a sweet treat.
The afternoon focused on history at the Reconstruction Era National Historical Park. Students participated in a scavenger hunt and heard from park rangers about key figures and events that shaped the nation. They stood on historic grounds, including church steps where Harriet Tubman once spoke, and learned about Robert Smalls, the Beaufort native who escaped enslavement by commandeering a Confederate ship, secured freedom for others, and went on to serve as a U.S. Congressman.
“I enjoyed telling my classmates about the Reconstruction Era,” student Alex shared. Olivia added, “I enjoyed the historical scavenger hunt.”
The experience supported Bolden’s emphasis on preparing students for future success while building knowledge of American civics and an appreciation for local heritage and patriotic stories.
